【 northern territories 】So-called "Northern four islands" is indicated. Generic name of Etorofuto, Kunashirito, Shikotan island, and Habomai islands (Habomai archipelago). A Soviet army one-sidedly annuls the Japanese-Soviet neutrality pact and it invades in August, 1945. The Soviet Union tries to rule northern territories in the effect by Russia, and to make the home country belonging of the territory an accomplished fact since break-up of the Soviet Union after that. Japanese Government is a peculiar territory in Japan northern territories, is not included in the Kurile Islands abandoned by the peace treaty, and the opinion that the current state is an illegal occupancy of Russia is taken.
